 Dr. Joni Kristin Doherty is Board Certified in both Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Neurotology, with exceptional clinical skills in both general otology and skull base surgery. She is experienced in the evaluation and treatment of outer, middle, and inner-ear problems, including exostoses (surfer’s ear), ear infections, cholesteatoma, hearing disorders, Meniere’s disease, otosclerosis, and acoustic neuromas.

Prior to joining Shohet Ear Associates, Dr. Doherty served as an Otolaryngology faculty member and Neurotology Fellowship Director at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) since completing her neurotology fellowship training at the House Clinic in 2006.

Dr. Doherty maintains a faculty position at UCSD and remains involved in her acoustic neuroma (a.k.a. vestibular schwannoma) research there, for which she received NIH funding in 2007. She is also an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, and serves on both the Implantable Hearing Devices Subcommittee and the Certification Program for Otolaryngology Personnel (CPOP) Committee. She is active in the Association for Research in Otolaryngology as well, and is a member of the American Neurotology Society, the North American Skull Base Society, and the California Medical Association. Dr. Doherty also serves on the Editorial Board of Otology & Neurotology journal.

Dr. Doherty received her medical degree (M.D.) as well as a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Molecular Cell Biology from Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland, OR in 1999, and in 2009, she received the OHSU New Technology Innovations Award for her work on HER2 (ErbB2) Binding Antagonists, which she began as a graduate student there. She completed her internship and Otolaryngology Residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and her Neurotology Fellowship at the House Clinic in Los Angeles.
