Director, Business Development

Frequency Therapeutics (Nasdaq: FREQ) is a leader in the development of medicines designed to activate progenitor cells within the body to treat degenerative diseases. The company’s lead product candidate, FX-322, is a potential disease modifying therapy designed to regenerate damaged auditory hair cells to improve hearing function. In a Phase 1/2 study of FX-322, the company observed clinically meaningful improvement in key measures of hearing function in patients with sensorineural hearing loss, the most common form of hearing loss. A Phase 2a study is anticipated to begin in Q4 2019. The Frequency progenitor cell activation (PCA) approach stimulates progenitor cells to create functional tissue and the company is researching an array of additional degenerative diseases where PCA may be applied, including a discovery program in multiple sclerosis.

Fresh off a successful IPO, Frequency Therapeutics is looking for a versatile and highly-motivated individual to contribute to our Business Development activities. Reporting to the Vice President of Business & Corporate Development, the Director of Business Development will play a key role in driving Frequency’s strategic initiatives forward, and will be responsible, in partnership with the scientific leadership and Search & Evaluation Team, for the identification, evaluation and execution of transactions.

Activities will include playing an active role in sourcing in licensing opportunities, business case development, due diligence, strategic and valuation analyses, and structuring transactions. In addition, the individual will play a significant role in negotiating transactions and executing deals, working with senior management and legal and IP counsel. The successful candidate will be capable of externally representing Frequency on each of these facets, and effectively working cross-functionally to analyze, review and gain internal support for Business Development initiatives. Eventually the candidate will be responsible and lead Corporate and Business Development activities


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborate with the VP, Corporate Development and the Executive Team, specifically CSO and scientific team, to define and drive forward new partnerships to build the pipeline, in support of overall corporate strategy
  • Draw upon extensive industry network to routinely source in licensing business development opportunities, working closely with the CSO, that leverage Frequency’s progenitor cell activation technology
  • Attend major partnering, scientific and medical conferences to help prospect for new opportunities and build relationships with potential partners
  • Develop proactive and persuasive business cases, including financial modeling, ROI analysis, and partnering approach:
    • Build a strong and effective partnership with the S&E Team and Research and Development team to define technical characteristics of partnering opportunities of interest
    • Understand range of market potential, including consideration of competitive dynamics
    • Proactively anticipate stakeholder interests and concerns and addresses them appropriately
  • Plan/prepare/deliver presentations to external parties and routinely lead business discussions
  • Organize and lead cross-functional due diligence process and teams
  • Present strategic opportunities and present to management and board
  • Manage the contract drafting/review process with legal, and coordinate cross-functional input
  • Negotiate and close transactions consistent with business cases and corporate goals


  • Bachelor’s Degree plus MBA or advanced scientific degree required
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience working in biotech/pharma business development
  • Consulting, venture capital, and/or banking experience is a plus
  • Sound understanding of drug discovery and development
  • Experience in assessing opportunities for strategic fit with corporate objectives
  • Demonstrated track record of executing deals from sourcing to deal close, including analytics, negotiations, structuring, and contracting
  • Demonstrated ability to forge relationships and collaborate with many different disciplines both inside and outside the company
  • Strong financial modeling skills, with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent professional communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills with the ability to effectively communicate at all organizational levels
  • Ability to function autonomously and drive strategic decisions with sound business judgement
